12 dreamy tech-free rooms to escape from it all in

At Opun, with our app and state-of-the-art home improvement software, it goes without saying that we’re technology nuts. But, we do appreciate there are those days where your work phone won’t stop bleeping and seemingly everywhere you look there’s a device of some kind blaring out audio and video. Days when you just need get away from it all for an hour to sink into a good book, or just be alone with your thoughts.

If this frequently sounds like you then, you should think about creating a ‘tech-free room’ in your home, these spaces where TVs, laptops and other devices are forbidden are designed to bring a little zen into your life, and to nurture actual face-to-face human interaction within your household. To get your creative juices flowing, we’ve assembled this little inspirational gallery to give you an idea of what you could do!

It’s not a necessity, but if you can have an open fireplace in your tech-free area, then you definitely should. The warmth and ambient crackling of the fire as you relax with friends and family over a glass of wine cannot be beaten on a drizzly weekend afternoon.

One of the disadvantages of having a television in a room, is that we tend to direct all of the furniture to face it so everyone gets a good view. This however inhibits natural conversation, as it’s difficult to make eye-contact with anyone else. With no TV in the room you can arrange the seating to let conversation flow.

Tech-free zones are a book worm’s dream space, that area where you can sink your teeth into a novel and not have to worry about constant distraction. If you’ve accumulated such an impressive library as this over the years, then going for fitted bookshelves like these, is wonderful way to turn your collection into part of the room’s decor.

Without any technology to distract guests, you can really show off your creativity in your ‘no-tech’ areas, this stunning white living room has been filled with cleverly-curious items such as that dress-makers mannequin

This colossal corner sofa, could comfortably accommodate 20 people, and is the perfect pace to sit and ponder, who needs a TV to stare at when you can look out to the countryside landscape through those huge sliding doors?

Thus shabby-chic sunroom is proof that tech-free zones can be any room type. This eclectic space is the perfect blend of inside and outside elements.

Tech-free zones don’t have to be hyper-modern and minimalist, check out this stylishly-cluttered living room, reminiscent of a quaint city-centre coffee shop.

This extension contains nothing but a sofa and a bookcase, but in its simplicity has become the perfect tech-free zone, tranquil and unassuming.

This space with it’s mid-century styling echoes back to a time before such devices, which we now spend so much of our time with, were invented. We adore those ’60s modernist chairs and that white feature chimney breast.

No matter whether you’re a promising pianist or a gifted guitarist tech-free areas perfect for practicing in. There’s no distractions, and you don’t have to worry about playing over whatever the rest of the household are watching.

This cosy nook is perfect for any audiophile. Not much could be better than sinking into that sheep skin and indulging in a few hours of listening pleasure. Some purists may say that Hi-Fis shouldn’t be allowed in a truly techless room, but we’re inclined to disagree!

This light and airy room, with it’s wispy ambiance, looks like a fabulous place to unwind at the end of the day. We’re sure it’s cool and bright in the summer, and by dimming the lights and lighting some candles becomes the most ambient hygge space during the winter months.
