5 ways to make a small kitchen seem bigger

The kitchen is no longer just the place we go to cook and eat, it has become the social hub of the home, the congregation point where we go to chat and often where we choose to entertain. As such big kitchens are one of the most attractive features to home-buyers.

Many of us however, have to make do with smaller kitchens and here at Opun we know that not everyone wants to move or extend their home just in order to gain some kitchen space. Fear not however if your kitchen is on the petite side! A small but perfectly formed kitchen, planned out correctly,  can feel roomier than one twice the size if the space is utilised well. So, with that in mind we’ve come up with a list of some of our favourite ways that you can make your kitchen feel more spacious, without actually making it any bigger.

1)                 Reflective surfaces

Everyone knows the old trick of adding a mirror to a room to make it seem larger, you may not however be aware that other reflective surfaces can have the same effect.  By adding worktops and floor tiles made out of glossy materials like granite and using shiny stainless steel appliances you can create the illusion of more space in your kitchen.

2)                 Declutter your counters

In small kitchens work-space is at a premium and having too many visual distractions on your counters will make the whole room feel claustrophobic. So, keep appliances which you only use occasionally in the cupboard. Installing space saving items such as a wall mounted magnetic strip for your knives will further free up valuable space. Organise the appliances that you do want to keep on your counters within the same area – this will provide a minimalist feel that will make the room look bigger, better still you won’t need to worry about running out of places to put your chopping boards, pots, pans and plates while you’re cooking.

3)                 Clever Storage

Make the most of the space you do have by installing modern storage solutions. There are loads of clever cupboards and cabinets these days that extend outwards when open to allow you to easily organise your items. If you have high ceilings then make use of them; installing a stylish hanging rack for your cookware is a great way to free-up space for other things in your cabinets. Hanging racks aren’t just for utensils either try hanging produce from them and storing pots of fresh herbs on top to create a rustic farmhouse charm.

4)                 Illuminate

Good lighting will make any room feel airier. Using recessed lights or small pendant lamps is a good idea for smaller kitchens as they are visually unobtrusive, making it will feel like there is less space being used up. To add further lighting consider under-cabinet task lights for a simple and impressive finish. Avoid, if you can, obstructing any windows as natural light can’t be beat when it comes to making a room feel more spacious.

5)                 Lighten up

Using a dark colour scheme on the walls and counters will make a petite room feel even smaller, there’s no need to make everything white, but using lighter hues can go a long way in making a room feel less cramped.
