Combat the January blues with these home decor tips

It’s that time of the year where even the perkiest of us start to feel a bit glum. The tree’s been taken down, the last of the leftovers have been consumed and the only reminders of the festive season are a couple of unwanted Secret Santa gifts and a slightly expanded waistline.

So, if you are feeling the January blues just what can you do to combat them? Well diet and exercise are both great ways to boost your mood, but why not also bring a little extra joy into your home? Check out these tips for ways that you can brighten your day with a few home decor tricks.

Throw down some throws and cushions, while you’re at it

Let’s face it, unless you live in the southern hemisphere January is cold. And you probably spend much of your day being, well, cold. Whether your work takes you out and about, you walk to work, or your office’s central heating is perpetually broken, there’s a fair chance you spend much of your day this time of year daydreaming of somewhere warm.

So after a long day out in the freeze, you probably just want to curl up in the living room and get all cosy for an hour or two in the evening, which makes purchasing a few new blankets, rugs, cushions and other general upholstery a great idea for this time of year. Hygge up your home, it’s not just the latest interiors trend it will help you unwind after a stressful day.

Invest in a fancy coffee machine

Now the holidays are over and we’re all back to work, college or university, or we just have to contend with the daily of battle of getting the kids out of bed and off to school. We could all probably use a little bit of help slipping back into the routine of those chilly early starts. Caffine to the rescue! And, if one of your New Year’s resolutions was to save some cash, it could help you cutback on the expensive lattes when you’re out and about.

If you don’t already have a coffee machine now could be the perfect time to get one. Yes, we all love a nice cafetiere of coffee over a relaxed breakfasts on the weekends, but who has time midweek? Whether you go for a simple pod-fed version, or go for a proper barista style espresso machine complete with steam wand for a proper cuppa, they make a stylish addition to any kitchen. To really show off go for a commercial specification machine, or be super chic and opt for a built in version, which’ll save space too.

Clear your hallways

A preliminary search of the internet will find many bloggers and other sources claiming that clutter in the home can be cause of stress. And while, we’re not entirely sure if the science behind that is proven, it could be worth a shot, at least in the hallways.

Designers and architects sometimes refer to hallways and corridors as ‘transition spaces’ as their main function is to merely transition us from one room to another, they are rarely the intended destination your decide to move to within the home (unless hunting for a lost set of keys!).

This means they are often the first choice we shove our clutter and unwanted items to hide them away. The boxes of gadgets and christmas gifts, broken kitchen appliances we never got around to returning. We tend to stick all these items somewhere in the hall and forget about them for years. Why not free yourself from them and give these unwanted items the boot, rather than letting them sit in your home collecting dust?

Add some serenity to the bedrooms

After a bad day, sometimes all we want to do is go to bed and start again tomorrow. And not being able to get a good night’s sleep can be the cause of much strife. So, it’s a good idea to optimise your bedroom to get some slumber. We wrote a whole blog about how you can transform your bedroom into a sanctuary of slumber last year.

But in essence — make sure your mattress is in tip top condition, go for a neutral or pastel colour scheme, install a dimmer or separate set of ambient lighting, and think of ways to hide trailing wires from tech items which are visual distractions.

Add some sunny hues

When it comes to picking a new colour scheme for a room, yellow seems to have had a bad reputation. Maybe it reminds us of the colour schemes of 1960s and ‘70s interiors, or we were all permanently put off yellow decor by having to read ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ in our A-level English Literature class. Which means that most of us will opt for just about any other colour than yellow.

But, experts are starting to predict that aurulent hues are going to make a huge comeback when it comes to interiors over the next few years, particularly for walls and textiles, so now’s your chance to be ahead of the trend.

Adding yellow to a room adds energy and a feeling of sunshine, even in the winter. which is perfect for when you need a little pick me up to help you get on with it on a drizzly January afternoon. Be warned though, yellow may not always be the best choice for a main colour within the rooms palette, as research suggests it can make people quicker to lose their temper. A little goes along way so it’s a fantastic accent colour so think feature walls, cushions etc. it compliments many colours. But before you commit to a scheme, make sure it doesn’t clash!
