How to make your garden pop this Summer

You’ve toiled year round to make your garden a verdant vista and now that summer’s here it’s time to reap the rewards of your labour. But what are those additions that could really make your garden stand out this summer? Check out our gallery of ideas on how to really make your garden pop.

Recycle an old shipping container into a summer house

Modern architecture has always been about sleek rectilinear structures, which makes shipping containers with their boxy metallic nature perfect candidates for being upcycled into summer houses. Available on eBay for as little as £900, add some wooden flooring and modern windows and you’ve got yourself a stylish retreat. Designed to withstand extended periods while exposed to the elements at sea you won’t need to worry about the seasons harming your new summer house. With an estimated 30 million unused containers lying around it’s an environmentally friendly choice too.

Add a wood fired pizza oven

Available readymade from metal or have one custom built to your specifications out of traditional stone or clay, a pizza oven can make an interesting centre piece to a garden. What could be better than lounging back, after a long week, with a GnT in one hand and a slice of stone-baked pizza margherita in the other? They don’t just make great pizzas either; try roasting poultry, baking artisan bread or even making a delicious vegetable stew in one.

Get some sunloungers

You don’t  have to have a pool in order to have a set of sunloungers, they’re more comfortable than traditional deckchairs and come in a range of colours and styles.  Modern designs don’t just look great outdoors with the current trend of ‘bringing the outside in’ when the weather cools down you can bring them inside to enjoy year-round.

Outdoor Cinema

Outdoor cinema screenings have become hugely popular in recent years, with tickers selling out in a matter of minutes in London and other cities. Why not then have your very own outdoor cinema in your back garden?  On warm summer nights host your very own screenings of home movies or the latest DVD releases without having to go indoors.

Outdoor lighting can end up being a little of an oversight, with many focusing on using their garden in the day. But just because the sun has gone down it doesn’t mean it’s time to go inside. Get the most from your garden by adding some beautiful lighting, LED technology has really progressed in recent years providing energy-efficient, warmer coloured light than traditional outdoor lights. Try intertwining outdoor-safe fairy lighting around a veranda or trellis to add a little magic.

Wildflower garden

Not everyone has the time or the inclination to spend their weekends out in the garden with a trowel, but sowing a wildflower meadow is an easy and ecological way to add an attractive feature to your garden, once planted they need very little attention and wildflower seed mixes are readily available in many shops and garden centres. Not only is a wild meadow an attractive feature it will provide a safe haven for local wildlife so the rest of your garden will flourish.
