Spring has sprung, now sort out your garden!

Well folks, Tuesday marked the first official day of spring and despite the recent snow, you can feel it in the air. There are daffodils in the South and Easter eggs are cluttering the aisles of every supermarket. And best of all, on Sunday the clocks will change so it’ll be bright later into the evening.

Of course, this time of year means your thoughts will likely turn to giving your garden a little bit of TLC as you prepare for the coming months. Here are a few suggestions on how you can get it in tip top order.

Barbecues

Walk down any residential street on that first warm weekend of the year, and you will find that the air is thick with the aroma of (slightly charcoaled) sausages stemming from a never-ending stream of nearby barbecues.

While of course, the proper thing to do is to clean your barbecue thoroughly before you safely store it away over the winter, we are only human after all. A good many of us will have left it at the bottom of the garden for months leaving us to venture down, lift the lid and discover a mess of grease and carbonised matter floating in a lake of stagnant rainwater.

If this sounds like you, you may be cursing your previous self and preparing for an arduous few hours scrubbing at the mess with a wire brush, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Remove the grill, coat it in oven cleaner and leave it for 20 minutes or so, empty the barbecue and have a go at it with kitchen cleaner, before leaving it all sparklingly clean by carefully spraying it clean with a pressure washer.

Lawn

That great suburban status symbol, an Englishman’s pride – the lawn. March apparently marks the start of the ‘Lawn Care Year’ and if it’s warm enough, you can start mowing the lawn on a very high setting. You can also start manual weeding and applying iron sulphate moss killer to affected areas. Hold off fertilising until April and avoid the use of any weed killers ideally until May.

Plants

March is one of the prime seasons to begin planting and sowing plants to enjoy later in the year. Order your plug plants now, even if you don’t have a greenhouse, a warm window sill in the home will suffice to help these little guys thrive. You should also start feeding trees, shrubs and hedges with a slow release fertiliser. Flower wise, it’s time to plant summer flowering species such as lilies and gladiolus. If you’ve got a vegetable patch you can start sowing onions and garlic, as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.

Conservatory or decking

Now, is the optimum time to start looking into a way to invest into your garden so that you can really get the most out of it later in the year. Conservatories, decking or a patio could be installed in a short period of time for a relatively little investment allowing you to really get the most out of your backyard on those sunny bank holidays and long summer days.

Furniture

Finally, it is time to revive, or to invest in some garden furniture. There is a huge range of options out there when it comes to outdoor furniture — from inexpensive bistro sets to sumptuous cushioned sun-beds and special sets just for kids. However, one of the best things you can buy, if you have the winter storage space, is a large outdoor dining table and chairs. So you can dine late into the evening outside, surrounded by friends and family. Bliss!

Get ready

While, much of the country has been hit by another flurry of snow. Spring is officially here and brings with it a promise of long hot days later in the year. Get prepared now and you’ll thank yourself come June!
