Time to get your home ready for spring

Well, the country may still be reeling from the effects of Storm Doris, but Shrove Tuesday is just a few days away – Which means spring is right around the corner, the days are getting longer and hopefully soon we’ll be enjoying some better weather.

So with this in mind, just what can you do now to help welcome spring into your home? Well, we have a few ideas whether you’re just looking for a few simple things you could do one afternoon or a slightly larger home improvement project.

Add some florals…obviously

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking” — Was the sarcastic retort of Meryl Streep’s Anna Wintour-inspired character in The Devil Wears Prada, at the suggestion from one of her employees, that they do a feature on floral patterns for the spring issue.

However, of course florals patterns and flora in general will always be a perennial favourite for this time of year. Flowers and plants in general will add cheer to the home, and floral patterns lighten rooms and leave a generally positive affect upon our psyche. If you’re a flower lover there are several subscription services available from florists these days which will regularly deliver fresh bouquets straight to your door to help you liven the place up.

It could however be as simple as buying some new floral patterned bedding or cushions to brightenup the place.

Go for green

Pantone announced at the end of 2016 that their official colour for 2017 was a shade of green, appropriately entitled ‘Greenery’ or to give it its official code PANTONE 15-0343. So now is a great time to add some green hues to your home. Whether you decorate the new kitchen with some green tiling, spruce up the guest bedroom with a lick of green paint or invest in verdantly hued furniture for the living room, there are many options.

Think about your windows and doors

Upgrading your windows and doors now might seem like a bit of an absurdity. Why would you want to improve your insulation as the temperature starts to rise? Surely come summer a cooling draught would be welcome?

Well, double glazing will actually also help you keep your home cooler when the mercury soars. Especially modern varieties where the space in-between the two panes of glass is injected with an inert gas such as argon. Just make sure you cover windows when the sun is shining directly upon them to keep out the rest of the heat.

Also consider upgrading any old or run down patio doors with newer models, there are a great many varieties available whether you go for bi-folding, sliding or French varieties. Or if you opt for wood, PVCu or aluminium frames. Any of which will really help you get the most of your outside space come summer.

Embrace the good old-fashioned spring clean

Thought by some to trace back to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the spring-time memorial feast, Passover. We think that a spring clean just makes good sense. For starters it allows you to rid your home of the dust and ash that has accumulated in your carpets and upholstery thanks to any open fires or log burners, which will help you improve the well being of any asthma or allergy sufferers in your household.

Be thorough and do all of the chores you’ve been procrastinating for months (or possibly years) Clean the oven, the skirting boards, de-cobweb the garage, etc. And, if it all sounds too much, remember you could always pay for a professional, one-off, deep clean service.

Finally, consider getting that conservatory

If you don’t already have a conservatory on your home, the chances are you’ve at least considered adding one in the past. Ranked as one the best investment you can make in your home to boost its market value. A conservatory is one of the easiest ways to add space to your home, in many cases not being subject to planning permission, it can also be a relatively speedy project, that lets you get the most of your surrounding views year-round.
